Yesterday, members of FirstNet’s Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) met in Atlanta, Georgia, for their final meeting of 2017.  Over 30 PSAC members were in attendance, along with FirstNet Board Chair Sue Swenson and several members of the Board and FirstNet staff. The PSAC received updates from FirstNet on the status of opt-in decisions and technology demonstrations from the Office of the Chief Technology Officer and AT&T. They discussed outreach and engagement efforts in 2017, and strategy for 2018.  Of particular interest to the PSAC was the sharing of lessons learned PSAC members directly involved in the responses to hurricanes during the 2017 season.

PSAC Chair Tom Sorley led a lengthy discussion on the future of the PSAC and how it can best align with FirstNet’s mission and where it currently operates as an organization with AT&T. Driving and supporting FirstNet Network adoption, and continuing to provide timely operational and tactical feedback will be its primary objectives in 2018. The PSAC recognizes the need to be nimble and flexible to important requests in its advisory capacity. Striking that balance while championing the needs of an evolving constituency of public safety remains the PSAC’s greatest strength.

In discussing this point, PSAC Chair Tom Sorley noted, “The PSAC is the best cross-discipline group to break through the silos that the public safety community too often operates in. The suite of technology that the FirstNet Network is bringing to first responders will better coordinate our collective efforts before, during and after an incident or event, and in our day to day activities.”

FirstNet would like to thank Mr. Sorley and the PSAC Executive Committee for their leadership at this meeting. FirstNet would also like to extend its gratitude to members of the PSAC for their continued service, especially those in Hurricane and wildfire-effected areas.
